How to avoid Burnout at College

You have piles of school work, don’t sleep enough, don’t eat well, don’t exercise regularly, you are likely behind schedule and are chasing unrealistic goals?  If living a college life without taking care of yourself properly, you may face Burnout in the long run.

But don’t worry, we at peerTransfer have come up with a list of tips and tricks to help you avoid college Burnout and stay cool!

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a psychological term that refers to long-term exhaustion and lack of interest in work. It may be the result of relentless Stress, but it isn’t the same as simply too much Stress. Please see table below (source: Helpguide) to see the difference between Stress and Burnout.

What are the Symptoms?

  • (Emotional or Intellectual) exhaustion
  • Lack of motivation – unwillingness to study further
  • Frustration
  • Slipping academic performance
  • Not taking care of yourself – health problems
  • Apathy toward educational topics

How to prevent Burnout?

  • Relax:  Take a break from everything and take up meditation, listen to music, read a book, go for walks, meet up with friends and make sure to designate time for it.
  • Take care of yourself: Get the basics right by: getting enough sleep; eating good foods and avoiding too much junk food and alcohol; exercising (yoga for example).
  • Studying: Pay attention in class and take notes you think will be useful when you will be revising later.  Don’t procrastinate and leave everything to the last minute, as it will stay in the back of your mind and stress you while doing something else.
  • Time Management: Create a realistic study plan in the beginning of the year to help you stay on track. Doing a little each day will help you as you move into new material.

How to recover from Burnout?

  • Slow down: Once you’re Burned-Out, you’ll need to force yourself to take it slow or take a break. Cut down on activities and give yourself time to rest, reflect and heal.
  • Get support: When you’re Burned-Out, a natural tendency is to isolate yourself.  However, remember that your friends and family are there to help you.  They don’t need to “fix” your problems (they probably can’t), but being listened to can work wonders.
  • Reevaluate your priorities and goals: Take some times to think about your current goals and dreams, and figure out whether you might not be doing something that really matters to you. Who knows, you may even discover something new about yourself J

Remember that your college years will be some of the best years in your life.  Don’t stress about them too much, they’re supposed to be fun ;)
